Spirit of West Virginia Award Winner The Spirit of Wood County Award is presented to members of the community who have demonstrated spirit by their achievements and accomplishments. The awards are often presented to those who have been actively involved in Community Service, Agricultural Leadership, Education for Civic Responsibility, Industrial/Economic Development, and Self-Government. Mr. Hushion was presented this award to honor his life-long service to several different organizations, including but not limited to serving as coach of Parkersburg's Little League and Babe Ruth League for 18 years, serving on boards at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital for 36 years, and was past president of Greater Parkersburg Area Chamber of Commerce. Hushion is also a long time business man, having owned and managed McGlothin Printing Company from 1954-1981, and was sales consultant of Chapman Printing Co. from 1981 to the present. A good-sized crowd was on hand as the group fired its cannon to mark the state's birth in 1863 during the Civil War. Also on hand at the park was the traveling replica of the H.L. Hunley, the first submarine in history to sink an enemy warship. John Dangerfield, of South Carolina, built the replica eight years ago and has been traveling the country. |
