The Wood County Sheriff's Office has many duties. It is responsible for collecting taxes, enforcing the law, providing security for local courts, assisting with crowd and road control, overseeing the Holding Center, and transporting prisoners to the Regional Jail. The Sheriff's Office is comprised of 35 deputies, including the Sheriff, Ken Merritt, and 5 reserve deputies. Tax collection is now done at the newly renovated Judge Black Annex (Previously Town Square).
The Sheriff has a mobile Crime Scene Lab/Narcotics Task Force van. Wood County is one of only 2 counties in West Virginia with its own helicopter, which has proved invaluable in the detection and eradication of illegal crops.
